Is polysorbate 80 banned in Europe?

No — that's a common myth. It is authorised in the EU as E433. EFSA's 2015 re-evaluation found no genotoxicity or carcinogenicity concern and set a group daily limit of 25 mg per kg of body weight. Permitted within limits, not banned.

Is polysorbate 80 bad for your gut?

In mice, a 2015 Nature study found it changed gut bacteria and caused gut inflammation. A 2021 laboratory study on human gut bacteria found it shifted the community and raised its inflammatory potential. Human evidence is still limited, and regulators have not changed its approval status on the basis of this research.

Which label names should I look for?

Polysorbate 80, E433 or INS 433 — most common in ice cream, whipped toppings, sauces and bakery products. Its cousins polysorbate 20, 40, 60 and 65 appear as E432, E434, E435 and E436.

Is polysorbate 80 vegan?

Usually — the oleic acid it's made from is typically plant-derived, but it can come from animal fats and the source isn't declared on labels. Strict vegans need to check with the manufacturer.
