Are BHA and BHT safe?

What are BHA and BHT?
- Two synthetic antioxidants with one job: stopping fats and oils going rancid, so packaged food keeps its smell, taste and colour for longer
- They are close chemical relatives and are often used together in the same product
- BHA = butylated hydroxyanisole; BHT = butylated hydroxytoluene

Which foods contain them?
- Crisps, savoury snacks and instant noodles (and their seasoning sachets)
- Breakfast cereals, biscuits, baked goods and chewing gum
- Butter, lard, vegetable oils and shortening
- Fried, instant and dehydrated foods — including dried potato products
- In India: most common in fried snacks, instant noodles, biscuits and edible oils — look for INS 320 or INS 321, often listed together

Why do regulators disagree?
- The BHA cancer question comes from rodents. High doses caused tumours in the rodent forestomach — an organ humans don't have
- The split: IARC records the animal finding as a possible signal (Group 2B); food regulators judge the mechanism may not carry over to people and keep BHA permitted at low levels
- BHT got a milder verdict — the same evidence was thinner, so IARC left it unclassified (Group 3) and EFSA set a normal ADI
- The 2026 twist: the FDA reopening both reviews signals that "cleared decades ago" is no longer treated as the final word — newer data is being weighed
- These are honest readings of the same evidence, not a scandal — but a cancer classification on one of a pair, plus a live FDA review, is exactly the kind of disagreement we surface instead of hiding

Frequently asked questions
Are BHA and BHT banned in India?
No. FSSAI permits both (INS 320 and INS 321) as antioxidants in specified foods within prescribed limits, usually as a combined maximum. Neither is banned in India, the US, the UK, the EU, Australia or Canada.
Is BHA a carcinogen?
The WHO's cancer agency (IARC) rates it Group 2B — "possibly carcinogenic to humans" — based on rodent forestomach tumours, and the US National Toxicology Program lists it as "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen". Regulators still permit it because they judge the rodent mechanism may not apply to people and dietary exposure is low. LabelCop flags it on the strength of those classifications.
What's the difference between BHA and BHT?
They're chemical cousins doing the same job and are often used together. The key difference is the cancer verdict: BHA is IARC Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic); BHT is Group 3 (not classifiable — evidence too limited). That's why we treat BHA as higher risk.
