What is neotame?
- An artificial sweetener made by chemically modifying aspartame
- Roughly 7,000–13,000 times sweeter than sugar — so only a tiny amount is used
- More heat-stable than aspartame, so it also works in baked goods
- Label names: neotame, E961, INS 961
Which foods contain it?
- Sugar-free chewing gum and mints
- Diet and zero-sugar soft drinks
- Sugar-free desserts, dairy drinks and jellies
- Some baked goods and tabletop sweetener blends
- In India: one of the artificial sweeteners FSSAI permits — look for INS 961 or "neotame" in the ingredients list, usually near the end because so little is needed

Why do regulators disagree?
- They're answering different questions. EFSA, the FDA and JECFA assess toxicity: is it harmful at the amounts eaten? All three say no, within limits
- The WHO's 2023 guideline asks a different question: do sweeteners deliver the health benefit people use them for? Its answer: not in the long term
- Even the toxicity numbers differ: EFSA's 2025 daily limit (10 mg/kg) is now five times JECFA's (2 mg/kg) and over thirty times the FDA's (0.3 mg/kg) — same molecule, three limits
- The gut question is open, not settled: a 2024 laboratory study found effects on gut-lining cells and model gut bacteria in a dish — not in humans. EFSA's 2025 review, which came after it, found no safety concern at reported use levels

Frequently asked questions
Is neotame the same as aspartame?
No, but it's made from it. Neotame is a modified derivative — 30–60 times sweeter than aspartame itself — so far less is used. Unlike aspartame, it releases so little phenylalanine that the FDA doesn't require a PKU warning on foods containing it.
Is neotame banned anywhere?
We found no ban by EFSA, the FDA, FSSAI or the WHO. It's permitted in the US, EU and India within prescribed limits — and in 2025 EFSA raised its safe daily limit after finding no safety concern.
Didn't a study show it damages the gut?
A 2024 laboratory study found neotame affected gut-lining cells and model gut bacteria in a dish. It wasn't a human trial. EFSA's 2025 re-evaluation, published after that study, concluded there's no safety concern at permitted and reported use levels.
