Does aspartame cause cancer?

Not proven. IARC's 2023 "possibly carcinogenic" classification reflects limited evidence for liver cancer — the weakest of its positive categories. JECFA, the FDA and EFSA reviewed the evidence and kept aspartame approved within existing intake limits.

How many cans of diet cola would reach the WHO limit?

Roughly 9–14 cans a day for a 70 kg adult, depending on the brand's dose (a can is typically about 200 mg against a 2,800 mg daily limit). Habitual moderate intake sits well inside the ADI — the flag is about the unresolved cancer question, not about one can.

Is aspartame banned anywhere?

No major regulator has banned it. The EU, US, UK, India, Canada and Australia all permit it within limits. The IARC classification is a hazard label, not a ban.

Why do labels say "contains a source of phenylalanine"?

Aspartame releases phenylalanine when digested. People with phenylketonuria (PKU) — a rare inherited condition — cannot metabolise it safely, so the warning is mandatory in most markets, including India under FSSAI rules.

Is aspartame permitted in India?
